Frequently Asked Questions

How do we start?

The process of therapy can begin with an initial phone conversation. I find it can be helpful to schedule a brief time to speak on the phone so that I may hear your concerns, answer any questions, and discuss whether my practice might be the right fit for you. We then schedule an Intake appointment. This is a 50 minute appointment in which parents and I meet to discuss current concerns, obtain a developmental history, as well as begin to discuss treatment. If therapy will be for an adolescent, your adolescent may or may not attend part of this parent intake appointment. After the Intake appointment, we then schedule appointments for your child. In the initial therapy appointments, goals include establishing rapport and understanding the child's concept of 'the problem.' Typically after a few individual therapy appointments, I have parents return to discuss initial impressions, collaborate on treatment options and settle on a treatment plan.

How long will this take?

As much as I would like to be able to give you a definite answer to this question, it does truly depend on the unique circumstances that are brining you or your child to therapy. Along the way in therapy we will be in communication about how things are going, as well as options for continuing or stopping.  Not every child or adolescent is happy about coming to therapy, so taking time at the start of therapy to establish rapport can go a long way toward a successful treatment. I have worked in shorter-term treatments, as well as long-term treatments.

Is what we talk about confidential?

Yes, everything spoken about in therapy is confidential outside of clear exceptions to the rule.  These exceptions include suspected child abuse, suspected elder abuse, intent to harm oneself or harm another.  Information can also be shared if I have the legal parent/guardian’s written consent to do so, such as with another provider.

Will you speak with other providers involved?

Yes, I welcome the opportunity to speak with other providers who may be involved in your child's care.  I would need you to sign an authorization to release information form in order to speak with other providers.  I see myself as one member of the larger team working together to help your child feel better.

Once my child begins therapy, how involved can I be as the parent?

I see you, the parent, as the expert of your child. I find feedback from you essential to therapy.  This can be done through an email or a voicemail, although please remember that email is not a confidential form of communication.  If something significant has happened during the week, it can be helpful to be told about it.  While I welcome all information and feedback from you, the amount or type of information that I provide to you will vary depending on the individual child or adolescent. This can be especially true for adolescents.  Prior to starting therapy, we will all come to an agreement about what will or won't be shared, barring of course the clear exceptions to confidentiality. I think that is important that children and adolescents feel that they can say whatever they need to with me, and at the same time I feel that it is important that parents remain involved.  I will meet with parents from time to time to discuss treatment, how things are going, what may have changed and potential next steps.

Do you accept insurance?

Therapy is an investment in time and money.  While it important to find a psychologist with whom you feel comfortable, it is also important to make sure that you will be able to stay in treatment.  Please contact me to discuss my rate for therapy as it does change from time to time.

I am not on any insurance panels.  I am considered an out-of-network provider.  Your insurance company may provide some reimbursement for therapy services with me.  If you are looking for insurance to reimburse your out of pocket cost, it is important to speak with your insurance company before starting treatment. Once in treatment, I can provide you with insurance ready statements that you can submit.
