Child Psychotherapy
I work with children of all ages. In individual therapy with your child, I will gain an understanding of his or her view of what is going on, what might not feel good and how he or she is hoping that I might help. Depending on what brings your child to see me, we may work on affect identification and regulation, problem solving, identifying alternate ways to communicate with friends or family, or frustration tolerance. Therapy with your child will also involve communication with you, the parent. I feel that you are the expert on your child. I bring expertise as a psychologist, and together our collaboration can address your concerns.
Therapy with a child can be a combination of play therapy and talk therapy. The use of play in therapy can assist children in a number of ways, including increasing level of comfort in the therapy room, helping to work through challenges, and also providing an in-the-moment opportunity to work on things such as frustration tolerance, rule negotiation, and interpersonal interactions. You can read more about Play Therapy here. Play and games are familiar to children and being able to approach therapy within a familiar framework can be reassuring.
Areas of difficulty I see in working with children include behavioral problems, impulsivity, friendships, separation anxiety, school refusal, mood issues, and obsessive compulsive disorder. I am happy to speak with you about your specific concerns.
